IntroductionChina will strengthen efforts to further improve its legal system after recording many achievements
China will strengthen efforts to further improve its legal system after recording many achievements in this regard last year, Lou Qinjian, spokesman for the second session of the 14th National People's Congress, the country's top legislature, said on Monday.
While noting the 14th NPC Standing Committee achieved a good start in its work last year, Lou told a news conference that Chinese lawmakers will fulfill their duties to promote a more scientific, comprehensive, unified and authoritative socialist legal system with Chinese characteristics.
Last year, the 14th NPC and its standing committee formulated six laws, with revisions to eight laws and adoption of 11 decisions on law and major issues, he said, adding that 18 other pieces of legislation are being reviewed.
To uphold and improve the people's congress system, for example, Chinese lawmakers amended the Legislation Law and rules for members of NPC Standing Committee, with the passing of a decision on increasing reviews on normative documents, such as administrative regulations and judicial interpretations, to ensure they are consistent with the Constitution, according to him.
"We have also formulated the Food Security Law and revised the Company Law to advance the high-quality development," he said.
Putting people's livelihood as a priority, a law on construction of a barrier-free environment was adopted and the Charity Law revised, he said.
Chinese legislators also endeavored to protect the environment by making and modifying several laws. "We've designated the National Ecology Day, and began compiling a code on environment and ecology," he said.
Before the code, China adopted the Civil Code in 2020 to regulate civil activities.
In addition, a number of pieces of legislation involving foreign affairs have also been adopted to ensure high-quality opening-up, he said.
Furthermore, the NPC Standing Committee conducted five inspections on law enforcement, covering the Seed Law and Safety Production Law, he added.
